Word Vomit #10

He looks up at her, not even phased by her presence. "I thought I told you not to come?"

She steps back, her long skirt, waving in the wind. "I know, I just... um.."

"What is it?" He asks, annoyed. "Sometimes I just want to be left alone, okay?"

She nods, but sits down next to him anyway. "Isn't there anything you want to talk about?"

"Not particularly. If you're going to be here anyway, I'm not going to talk, so I hope you're okay with that."

She nods. Inside, she feels crushed, but she knows that he would probably rather her stay than go at this point. She knows that he will never admit that he needs her.

The night sky clears her mind as she looks up into the pool of stars. The cold winter air chills her bare skin exposed on her ankles, and she shivers. He seems to notice, yet does not offer any comments. Despite all of the bad energy, she smiles because she knows that she has at least some effect on him. He seems to want to say something, but resists with all his strength.

She turns to him. "You can tell me if you want."

He shakes his head, and rests his face in his palms, leaning against his knees. "I'm sorry, there's nothing to say."

"At least you're apologizing now." She looks back up to the stars, gleaming brightly in the dark night sky. "They're pretty, aren't they?"

"Yeah they are." He looks up at the sky in thought for a moment. "But not as pretty as you are."

She laughs and pushes her long hair behind her ears and pulls up her hood to cover from the cold. "Are you just saying that to shut me up, or do you really mean it?"

He turns to her, eyes serious. "I mean it. Can't you take a compliment?"

Her smile drops, "I thought you weren't talking to me," she says softly.

"I'm not... you just keep making me talk." He returns his gaze to the stars and they fall into silence again.

After a few minutes of empty silence, she turns to him again. "I'm not afraid of mutual silence. I can sit here next to you in silence."

"Sure. Do whatever you want. I don't mind."

And the two of them continue to sit in silence, passing the night.
